This past Sunday, December 10th, the winners of the “World Travel Awards 2017” were unveiled. Portugal won the most coveted award of the evening, that of “World’s Leading Destination”. This is the first time Portugal has won that title, ending Dubai’s 4 year streak.
Portugal came ahead of several world famous destinations. At the Gala that took place in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, the excellence of Portugal’s Tourism Industry was recognized in several other categories. It won “Europe's Leading Beach Destination” thanks to the wonderful Beaches up and down our coast, so much appreciated by tourists. Lisbon was considered “World's Leading City Break Destination” cementing its reputation as a great weekend getaway. The awards weren’t limited to the mainland, with the Madeira Islands taking the title of “World's Leading Island Destination” for the 3rd year in a row.
This recognition wouldn’t have been possible without the promotion work done by “Turismo de Portugal”, that was acknowledged as “World's Leading Tourist Board”. The Website visitportugal.com, was also considered the best in its category.
All the awards are owed to the public. The winners on each category were chosen by an online vote. Many of the millions of Tourists that visit Portugal annually might have contributed to that, including the thousands of Saudis that have come on their holidays. Those who haven’t yet visited, now have one more incentive to discover what is now officially considered the World’s Best Tourism Destination.
